Amir* lives in a small subdivided unit (SDU) in Jordan with his wife and their three young daughters – eight, six and two years old. They have been in this unit for six years and are recipients of the pest control services offered by Habitat for Humanity Hong Kong. When our team visited them in August 2023, the need for such services was clear. This SDU was over-run with cockroaches, causing a hygiene risk especially for a family with small children. Cockroaches are known carriers of bacteria and contaminate surfaces as well as food.

When meeting and speaking with Amir, he appreciated the regular pest control services offered, describing his interactions with Habitat staff positively. He felt comfortable and as though he was interacting with family friends. Amir’s overriding message was striking in its simplicity: despite any hardship he may face, he loves his home, because it is his children’s home. This is where they are together.

“Home is not just a building. When I come home, I open the door and the first thing I see is my children playing in the living area. It doesn’t feel like a building in an area full of construction, it is where my children are. I love my living area because they play here.”

For many of us with young families, our living room is our sanctuary. It is where we witness small miracles, like our babies taking their first steps or speaking their first words. But more often than not, our living room is where we experience the mundane – repeated rituals that punctuate our daily lives. Breakfast, homework, a story before bed. The feeling of coming home at the end of a long day and opening the door to our children playing, just like Amir.

        ABOUT DBIS

Discovery Bay International School is an institution founded in 1983 by the Cha family. It currently offers education all the way from kindergarten to high school. The school provides an outstanding holistic international education to students in an inclusive and nurturing learning environment while seeking to inspire and empower their potential as global citizens in a rapidly changing world.

        DBIS AND HABITAT

Discovery Bay International School (DBIS) has been an active supporter of Habitat for Humanity Hong Kong since August 2022. Over a dozen students are part of the Habitat for Humanity ECA (Extra Curricular Activity), driving various activities on campus to raise awareness of Habitat’s work and fundraise for the cause of decent and affordable housing.

The teacher leading the ECA, Mr. Richard Koenig, previously worked for Habitat for Humanity in South America and provides passionate support and direction to the students.

        DBIS’ CONTRIBUTION

DBIS’ main focus last year was to raise awareness of Habitat throughout the school. To achieve this, a couple of the student volunteers presented in different class assemblies over the course of a whole week. They talked about the housing crisis in Hong Kong and how they intended to take action to assist vulnerable families by working with Habitat for Humanity and undertaking community service. Other students wrote articles which were published in the school’s journal and made business accounts on social media, advocating for and promoting Habitat.

This year, DBIS has shifted its focus to fundraising and charity events to assist in the collection of funds that will then be either donated to Habitat or used to help the less fortunate directly. So far, they have organised two major fundraising events, one just before Christmas vacation in December and the other in March. Banners and posters were put up throughout the school, asking people to attend and enjoy themselves while doing what they could to improve Hong Kong’s housing conditions. The former event was on a bigger scale and ended up raising around HK$3000! Both events consisted of a scrumptious brownie sale and busking. The idea was for people to enjoy their brownies and sing along to upbeat music.

The Habitat for Humanity ECA in DBIS also comprises an art section where some of the school’s best artists create mesmerising paintings that could be then sold in an art sale to raise money. They have already made a couple that are ready for the market. One of the students, who specializes in design technology, is collaborating by making small but efficient multipurpose furniture items that can then be donated. The ECA is looking to increase its impact in the local community and recruit more student members in the coming years.

If you are interesting in starting an ECA or Habitat club at your school, please email partnerships@habitat.org.hk to find out more.

Written in collaboration with Tanush Gupta from DBIS.

(HONG KONG, February 6, 2023) Habitat Hong Kong continues to drive initiatives in Asia-Pacific to build more equitable housing markets and facilitate access to resilient shelter for low-income families. In November, Credit Suisse APAC Foundation approved a 3-year extension of their partnership with Habitat for Humanity, to further support low-income households in the Philippines with access to microfinance products that foster the adoption of green and disaster resilient housing materials.

Through this new grant partnership, Habitat for Humanity’s Terwilliger Center for Innovation in Shelter will build capacity of financial institutions in the Philippines to sustainably integrate client-centric and green shelter financing products into their long-term business plans, the first such initiative in the country. It seeks to address financial exclusion among underprivileged segments, which in the Philippines is an issue compounded by frequent natural disasters and the harsh impacts of climate change, particularly on housing conditions.

The funding provided by Credit Suisse APAC Foundation is expected to support about 10,000 low-income households who will benefit from awareness and education services on climate-friendly and green construction practices and use of digital technology. Simultaneously, 3,000 households are expected to receive green housing microfinance loans from the financial institution(s) partnering with TCIS and adopt green construction and disaster-resilient practices to improve their homes.

“We are deeply committed to improving financial inclusion in the Asia Pacific region. By partnering with Habitat for Humanity, we play a critical role in closing the housing backlog in the Philippines by providing vulnerable families with improved access to affordable and green housing finance solutions,” said Laetitia Lienart, Head of Corporate Citizenship and Foundations APAC at Credit Suisse and Executive Director of Credit Suisse APAC Foundation.

The project began with a feasibility study in the Philippines, which is currently determining the potential use cases of green housing, such as materials, technologies and building practices that may be desirable and feasible among low-income households, and their financing requirements for such use cases. The results of the study will also help identify the right stakeholders for prototype testing of microfinance services.

She was one of the 13 volunteers from Hilti Asia who joined one of our Project Home Works programme. The volunteers helped to renovate two homes, one for Grandma Chan and one for Grandpa Choi. Even though it was a very hot day, all the volunteers were eager and excited to start renovation right away.

Grandma Chan lives in the first home and has had arthritis for a few years now. She could not move around much and has to lay down on her bed once a while to ease the pain. She was thrilled to see so many passionate volunteers coming together to help her renovate her ceilings, especially the kitchen, because it has affected her cooking and eating.

One of the volunteers, Jiwon Hwang, who renovated Grandma Chan’s home, shared her experience, ”It was a lot harder than expected. When I volunteered, I thought it was just a simple experience, but it was a real experience as a whole. I could not imagine finishing all the work I had to finish today, but I felt very satisfied with our work today and I am happy and glad that Grandma Chan is happy with it as well!”

Even though she felt very tired at the end of the day, she volunteered to go and visit Grandpa Choi’s home to see if the other group needed extra help! We are so happy to see that she enjoyed her volunteer experience. Thank you Jiwon for sharing her experience with us and a massive thank you to Hilti Asia’s amazing volunteers for their hard work.

Meet Gabrielle. She joined our Project Home Works programme, as a part of the HandsOn Hong Kong Serve-a-thon in June 2022. She alongside two other young volunteers renovated ceilings for an elderly woman living alone in substandard housing. It was a very hot summer day, but the volunteers powered through the heat and felt very satisfied with their work for the day.

When Gabrielle learnt that the bits falling off the ceiling would affect her cooking, she said ‘’When I think about the bits of the ceiling falling to your food, from a health and sanitary point of view, its something very simple, just cleaning the ceiling but it can make a big difference.’’

Before we wrapped up the volunteer day, volunteers have to clean and tidy up Grandma Ma’s home. However, Grandma Ma insisted on doing the cleaning herself. Some volunteers felt frustrated because they wanted to help, but Gabrielle said ‘’I think it was on your volunteer pack how dignity is such an important thing. We went into the volunteer activity thinking to help a senior, but in her manner, she showed to us that she is fully capable of doing certain things. Although she could not get on the ladder and do the ceiling part, but I think when it got to the cleaning part, she felt like she could do this, it was her saying ‘’I can do this, I got this, this is my home and I know how I want it’’.

Gabrielle reflected ‘’I think it is good to do a hands-on and practical activity with other people. It’s lovely to meet new people, learn a new skill and to do something that is a very tangible benefit and at the end of the session we could see. When we walked in and the ceiling was damaged, bits falling off and uneven, by the end of it, it was a nice, clean, and newly painted ceiling which hopefully makes the living environment nice and comfortable for Grandma Ma”.

A massive thank you to our volunteers and HandsOn Hong Kong for organising such an amazing community volunteering event every year! Every volunteer can make a difference and help us to achieve our vision of a world where everyone has a decent place to live.
