A Call to Action 2009

Habitat for Humanity of Winchester-Frederick County - Woman Build

Since 1950, the number of households headed by single women has grown by 400%.  Unfortunately, less than half of those women own their own home. Women Build is not about excluding men, but about including women.  Begun by Habitat International in 1991, the Women Build program is designed specifically to recruit, train and empower women to build.

Women and their children are disproportionately affected by poverty and substandard housing. This is true nationally, internationally and right here in Winchester-Frederick County and the surrounding areas. Of the calls that Habitat receives inquiring about our homeownership program, more than 80% are made by women. Since 1997, Habitat for Humanity of Winchester-Frederick County has partnered with 37 families for homeownership. Of those, 22 are headed solely by women. Both children and young adults have benefited from the Habitat for Humanity ownership program here in our Community.

Remella Brown is single mother of two daughters, Tatyana 10 and Tyazia 3. As a single working mother with limited income, they are living in a tiny apartment paying high rent and not enough living space for the family. The need for better living conditions and the security of providing a safe affordable home for her daughters, Remella applied for the habitat program and was excepted in 2008.

The Work of Habitat for Humanity of Winchester-Frederick County is made possible only through partnerships.
